- There are numerous genes that are linked to causing OCD
- SERT (Serotonin transporter gene) is mutated in people with OCD - causes an increased reuptake of serotonin in the neuron which means less serotonin in the synapse
- COMT gene regulates the function of dopamine. Mutation decreases the activity of COMT and increases dopamine levels
- Twin studies show the MZ twins have a 87% OCD concordance rate compared to around 40% in DZ
- Although it is high for MZ twins, there is never an 100% concordance rate so there has to be extraneous causes
- There are numerous genes that are linked to causing OCD
