- Size of emission - more pollution = more harm
- Volume of water - larger water body = more diluted pollutant
- Residence time of water - shorter residence time = more like pollutant is removed before it builds up
- Conditions for degradation - rate depends on conditions needed e.g. UV light, O2 conc, high temperature
- Removal rate - pollutants may be absorbed onto sediment particles and removed
- Dispersal - may be diluted by currents but could still bioaccumulate
