  • Factors Affecting the Effect of Water Pollution
    • Size of emission - more pollution = more harm
    • Volume of water - larger water body = more diluted pollutant
    • Residence time of water - shorter residence time = more like pollutant is removed before it builds up
    • Conditions for degradation - rate depends on conditions needed e.g. UV light, O2 conc, high temperature
    • Removal rate - pollutants may be absorbed onto sediment particles and removed
    • Dispersal - may be diluted by currents but could still bioaccumulate
