- Trans = E
- The isomer that has two of the same group on opposite sides of the double bond is called the trans OR E isomer.
- Cis = Z
- The isomer that has two of the same group on the same side of the double bond is called the cis OR Z isomer.
- E/Z isomers have a lack of free rotation around the double bond
- There are also 2 different groups attached to the C=C.
- Cis-trans notation can be used for simple molecules whereas E/Z notation works for both simple and complex molecules.
