  • Evidence for separate stores in MSM
    • STM
      • Peterson and Peterson (1959) - Pps were required to remember a single trigram of three consonants for intervals of 3,6,9,12,15 and 18 seconds. The trigram was read out and pps were given a number and had to count down in threes. Recall got progressively worse as the delay grew longer and when rehearsal was prevented. This provides evidence for the existence of STM and its limited duration and the need for rehearsal to prevent decay.
      • Miller (1956) - 'the magical number seven plus or minus two'. We can view the STM as a series of 5-9 slots in which information can be stored.
      • Baddeley (1966b) - when there was acoustic confusion, people didn't perform well, showing that STM is encoded acoustically.
    • LTM
      • Bahrick et al. (1975) - very long-term memory using a series of memory tests on the names and faces of students. 90% accurate within 15 years, 70-80% accurate within 48 years after leaving school
      • Brady et al. (2008) - showed pps 2500 objects over 5.5 hours. They were shown pairs of objects and had to identify them. When they saw the original objects and random ones, 92% identified them. When similar objects were shown, 88% identified it and from a different angle, 87% identified it.
      • Baddeley (1966b) - semantically similar words were not remembered easily whereas acoustically similar words were fine.
    • **
      • Sperling - pps were asked to remember letters from a grid and then had to recall letters from the whole grid or a specific row. 4/5 letters were remembered from the whole grid and 3 from a row.
