MULTI-STORE MODEL

MULTI-STORE MODEL

Advantages

  • First model and can therefor be tested
  • It gives an account of structure and process: 3 stores and attention and rehearsal
  • Lots of evidence: Sensory memory- Sperling 1960, and STM & LTM- Serial posistion effect
  • Clive Wearing shows that STM and LTM are separate stores

Disadvantages

  • Oversimplified
  • Too much reliance of rehearsal
  • Focuses too much on structure and too little on process
  • FT- Brain damage due to a car accident and had problems with verbal, but normal visual- is there more than one STM?

Evaluation

Overall, the MSM shows that there are separate stores in memory and there is evidence for this. However, what the MSM fails to do is tell us why things are stored in that way, it is too simplistic and does not give us detail as to why some memories are stored in LTM and others are displaced. So overall, the MSM is affective in telling us that there are separate stores, but fails to concentrate on detail which has little use to us.
