- Poland- the solidarity movement won an election in 1989 and the communist government collapsed
- Germany- Germany was unified in 1990 and prior to this many east germans fled through Hungary
- Hungary- opened borders to the west allowing many people to flee to the west via Hungary
- American Involvment
- Poland- sent aid to the solidarity movement
- SDI-the star wars program brought and end to the arms race and thus the cold war

- Perestroika- introduced private enterprise this showed communism was failing
- Glastnost- removed censorship in the soviet union, led to free speech and lack of support
- democratization- got more people involved in to the communist party
