    • East Europe
      • Poland- the solidarity movement won an election in 1989 and the communist government collapsed
      • Germany- Germany was unified in 1990 and prior to this many east germans fled through Hungary
      • Hungary- opened borders to the west allowing many people to flee to the west via Hungary
    • American Involvment
      • Poland- sent aid to the solidarity movement
      • SDI-the star wars program brought and end to the arms race and thus the cold war
    • Gorbachev
      • Perestroika- introduced private enterprise this showed communism was failing
      • Glastnost- removed censorship in the soviet union, led to free speech and lack of support
      • democratization- got more people involved in to the communist party
