  • EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE NAZI PARTY 1920-22
    • HITLER'S EARLY CAREER
      • 20 April 1889= Born in Austria
      • 1908-13: Lived in Vienna & developed his anti-Semitism (hatred of Jews)
      • 1913= Moved to Munich
      • 1914= Joined German army, served with distinction, won the Iron Cross
      • 19 Sep 1919= Joined German Workers' Party (DAP)  -1st meeting he attended (12 Sep 1919) only 23 people & 3rd meeting= only funds= 7 marks and 50pfennings (enough to buy few groceries) but Hitler was attracted to party's ideas
      • 1920= Renamed to Nationalist Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP/ Nazi Party)
    • SETTING UP THE NAZI PARTY
      • -H= good at public speaking -Feb 1920= charge of recruitment & propaganda & attracting new members to party -1921- strong enough to challenge Drexler & take over leadership
        • DAP  June 1920=1000 members   end of 1920=3000
      • PARTY POLICY
        • THE TWENTY-FIVE POINT PROGRAMME: -strongly opposed Weimar politicians who accepted TOV, democracy & Jews. -Union of all Germans to form a greater Germany -Getting rid of the TOV -Citizenship of the state only to German blood so no Jew was to be a citizen of the nation -Government to nationalise all businesses formed in corporations -All newspaper editors and contributors to be German, non-German papers to appear only with govt, permission
      • HITLER'S PERSONAL APPEAL
        • 46 party gatherings b/n Nov1919-Nov1920 H appeared on 31 occasions as star speaker
      • PARTY ORGANISATION
        • Jan 1920= Permanent office in Munich, H chose Rudolf Schussler as party's full time administrator -New name= NSDAP -Dec 1920= funds for a newspaper, Volkischer Beobachter (the 'People's Observer'), costs 180,000marks, initial circulation= 11,000 copies but within a year it reached 17,000 copies, all across Munich, Bavaria and all across Germany
      • PARTY LEADERSHIP
        • July 1921- Hitler becomes leader, defeats Drexler-Rudolf Hess= healthy academic, H deputy -Hermann Goering= young, wealthy WW1 fighter pilot -Julius Streicher= publisher, founded another Nazi newspaper ,Der Sturmer ('The Stormer')
        • -Ernest Rohm= scar-faced, bull-necked, ex-army officer, popular amongst ex-soldiers -Also friends with powerful General Ludendorff= WW1 German Army leader
      • THE STURMABTEILUNG (SA) OR 'BROWNSHIRTS'
        • Aug 1921, paramilitary force -unemployed, demobilised, ex-soldiers (mostly Freikorps)  -Would disrupt opponents meetings (especially communists), often beat up opposition supporters, controlled crowds
          • Ernest Rohm= in charge  -Stosstrupp (Shock Troop)= trusted members of SA to be his trusted bodyguard  -H controlled NSDAP like a military leader
        • -Aug 1922= 800 members  -1922=6,000  -1924=50,000
