  • Nervous + endocrine systems
    • Human nervous system
      • CNS + PNS
        • PNS = ANS + SNS
          • ANS = sympathetic + parasympathetic
        • CNS = brain + spinal cord
    • CNS = centre of conscious awareness, cerebral cortex = highly developed
      • Left hemisphere = maths, logic
        • Right = creative, language
    • PNS = transmits messages to/from CNS
    • ANS = governs vital organs + functions
    • SNS = governs muscle movement, info from sensory receptors
    • Endocrine system = works with NS to control vital functions
      • Slow but widespread + powerful
      • Glands produce hormones secret into bloodstream effect cells with correct receptors
        • Master gland = pituitary gland, controls all glands
        • Thyroid gland = thyroxine affects cells in heart + metabolic rates
    • Endocrine + ANS
      • Fight/flight work in parallel
        • ANS from resting state (parasympathetic) to physiological arousal sympathetic state
          • Hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland
            • Releases adrenocorticotropic hormone
              • ACTH stimulates adrenal gland to produce adrenaline
                • Increases heart rate, breathing, panic etc
    • Neurones
      • Sensory - messages from PNS back to CNS
      • Motor - messages from CNS to muscles and glands
      • Relay - connects sensory and motor
