  • Christmas
    • Advent
      • Christians prepare for the coming of Jesus during the season of Advent. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.
        • During the four weeks of Advent, Christians remember the Old Testament prophecies about the coming of Jesus and think about the second coming of Jesus along with the final judgement.
        • They usually light an advent wreath on each of the Sundays in Advent, lighting the final one on Christmas Day.
        • Catholics usualy have to free themselves from sin before Christmas by recieving a sacrament of reconciliation.
        • Anglicans and Nonconformist Christians have carol services such as the Festival of Lessons and Carols held in Anglican cathedrals on Christmas Eve.
    • The twelve days of Christmas
      • Christmas ends on the 6th January usually begin with special services on Christmas Eve and end with a special Mass on the Sunday after Christmas.
      • Services on the morning of Christmas day recall the Gospel accounts of Christmas and on Christmas Day, gifts are exchanged to show love for each other and God's love for us.
    • Significance
      • Christians celebrate Christmas to celebrate the incarnation.
      • Christians believe before the incarnation it was only possible to have a partial relationship with God because of the effects of sin. However, through the incarnation the power of sin has been cancelled allowing a full relationship with God
      • Christians feel united with other Christians when they celebrate it as a worldwide community. The celebration reminds them that whatever their colour or ethnicity, they all share the same faith.
      • Christians remember the importance of family through Christmas and in their worship remember to have the strength of Mary and Joseph when they were travelling before the birth of Jesus.
