- Causes of the military stalemate (1951-53)
- Two sides equally matched
- Seoul changes hands five times between June 1950 and March 1951
- Prior to Spring 1951, KW characterised by rapid advance and retreats, such as when UN troops approached the Yalu river and were forced to retreat
- Ch launched swift offensive on SK on 22nd April 1951 - cost of lives too high
- Whilst US more advanced, Chinese had inexhaustible manpower
- Terrain suitable for trench warfare
- Combatant's front lines stabilised near 38th Parallel and both dug in for trench warfare
- US and USSR did not go all out
- US and Soviets unwilling to use full military capability
- Ridgway's successor, General Matt Clark, wanted to attack Ch, Manchuria and use atomic bombs - US rejected these ideas
- USSR even more careful - while encouraging Ch, Soviets limited their own involvement
- Although Stalin gave Kim war materials (pilots, war planes) but kept Soviet navy and troops out of it
