  • Causes of the military stalemate (1951-53)
    • Two sides equally matched
      • Seoul changes hands five times between June 1950 and March 1951
      • Prior to Spring 1951, KW characterised by rapid advance and retreats, such as when UN troops approached the Yalu river and were forced to retreat
      • Ch launched swift offensive on SK on 22nd April 1951 - cost of lives too high
      • Whilst US more advanced, Chinese had inexhaustible manpower
    • Terrain suitable for trench warfare
      • Combatant's front lines stabilised near 38th Parallel and both dug in for trench warfare
    • US and USSR did not go all out
      • US and Soviets unwilling to use full military capability
      • Ridgway's successor, General Matt Clark, wanted to attack Ch, Manchuria and use atomic bombs - US rejected these ideas
      • USSR even more careful - while encouraging Ch, Soviets limited their own involvement
        • Although Stalin gave Kim war materials (pilots, war planes) but kept Soviet navy and troops out of it
