  • Catholic Christianity-Beliefs-(1.7) Eschatology
    • Eschatology is the catholic study about the concept  life after death-This includes, death, judgement , resurrection, heaven, hell and purgatory
    • JUDGEMENT-When people die they are judged by God
      • "For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil according to what he has done in the body"
      • Depending on how a person has lived determines where they go when they die
        • Catholic also believe there will be a day of judgement at the end of time when bodies will be raised and reunited with their soul-This is outlined in the parable of the sheep and goats
          • " and he will separate them from another as a Sheperd separates the sheep from the goats... come you that are blessed by the father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world"
    • HEAVEN-Believed to be perfection-No one knows what it's like since  its beyond human understanding and imagination
      • "Those who are perfectly purified...will live forever with Christ"-CCC
      • "No eye has seen, nor heard ,nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him"
    • HELL-evil people who rejected Gods will, will go to hell-catholics believe if a person goes to hell its becasue of the choices they have freely made-refusal to love and rejection of Gods guidance
      • "To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting Gods merciful love means remaining separated from  him forever-CCC
      • "The chief punishment from God is eternal separation from God"-CCC
    • PURGATORY-Christians who died imperfect and possibly members of other religions & non-believers who have lived good lives will go to purgatory to be purified of their sins
      • Place of purposeful suffering where the realization of resisting God on life becomes apparent-cleansing fire
        • There's very little mention in the bible therefore more traditionally a catholic belief
          • "To achieve holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven"
    • RESURRECTION- when a person's soul is reunited with their glorified body
      • This resurrected body will be similar to earthly body but different, christ will return at the end of the world when the dead will be raised and God will judge everyone and create a new heaven and earth
        • "I believe in the resurrection of the body"-Nicene creed
  • divergent views
    • non-Catholics do not believe in this as its based of the CCC
      • Evangelical protestants believe that people won't be judged until judgement day
      • Some catholics believe that when the body dies just the soul will go to live with  God in heaven
    • some Christians do not believe in any form of hell and we will have the opportunity to lern from our mistkaes
  • believing in heaven gives an incentive to live a good life, death is a reminder to make everyday count &
    • "Death lends urgency to our lives, we only have a limited time to bring our lives to fulfillment"
  • "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me"
