      • Heart

      • Delivery of oxygen, fuel, and nutrients to the tissues of the body
      • Removal of carbon dioxide and waste products from the tissues
      • Maintenance of a constant body temperature (thermoregulation)
      • Prevention of infection (immune function)
  • The Heart
    • Formed from MYOCARDIUM (specialized muscle tissue)
    • Surrounded by PERICARDIUM (tough protective sac that allows heart to expand and contract)
    • EPICARDIUM   lines outside of heart, ENDOCARDIUM  lines inside of heart
    • Has 4 separate chambers: atria  (upper) and ventricles (lower)
    • A "double-pump"
    • Divided into right and left heart; separated by interventricular septum
      • Right heart: pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation)
      • Left heart: pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circulation)
