  • C9 Properties of Hydrocarbons
    • Alkanes
      • Methane, ethane, propane and butane
    • Viscosity
      • this tells us the thickness of a fluid
      • Fluids with a high viscosity flow slowly (honey)
      • as the size of the hydrocarbon molecules increases, the molecules get more viscous. (methane to butane
        • so long chain hydrocarbons flow very slowly
    • Flammability
      • Flammability tells us how easily a hydrocarbon combusts (burns)
      • short chain hydrocarbons rae extreamly flammable
      • as the size of the hydrocarbon molecule increases, the molecucle gets less flammable.
        • Methane for flammable that Butane
        • Long chain hydrocarbons are difficult to burn
    • Boiling Point
      • the boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid turns to gas
      • short chain hydrocarbons have low boiling points
      • All hydrocarbons are at room temperature
        • this is because they all have boiling points which are lower than room temperature
      • as the size of the hydrocarbon molecules increases, the boiling point also increases
        • so very long chain hydocarbons have very HIGH BOILING POINTS
        • Methane bp=-161c Ethane bp=-89c Propane bp=-42c Butane bp=-1c
