- C9 Properties of Hydrocarbons
- Alkanes
- Methane, ethane, propane and butane
- Viscosity
- this tells us the thickness of a fluid
- Fluids with a high viscosity flow slowly (honey)
- as the size of the hydrocarbon molecules increases, the molecules get more viscous. (methane to butane
- so long chain hydrocarbons flow very slowly
- Flammability
- Flammability tells us how easily a hydrocarbon combusts (burns)
- short chain hydrocarbons rae extreamly flammable
- as the size of the hydrocarbon molecule increases, the molecucle gets less flammable.
- Methane for flammable that Butane
- Long chain hydrocarbons are difficult to burn
- Boiling Point
- the boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid turns to gas
- short chain hydrocarbons have low boiling points
- All hydrocarbons are at room temperature
- this is because they all have boiling points which are lower than room temperature
- as the size of the hydrocarbon molecules increases, the boiling point also increases
- so very long chain hydocarbons have very HIGH BOILING POINTS
- Methane bp=-161c Ethane bp=-89c Propane bp=-42c Butane bp=-1c
- Alkanes
