Definitions

Homologus series           - A family of compounds with the same functional group and the same                                                 general formula, therefore the same chemical properties

Functional groups           - A group of bonded atoms that give the members of a homologus series                                            their characteristic properties

Hydrocarbons                 - A compound made up of only carbon and hydrogen

Alkanes                           - Saturated hydrocarbon

Alkenes                            -  Unsaturated hydrocarbon

Polymerisation                 - The joining together of many small molecules (monomers) to form very                                              long molecules of repeating units (polymers)

Saturated hydrocarbon    - Contains no carbon-carbon double bond
