    • Cautery used to stop blood loss but transfusions banded as pateint often died
    • 1901: Karl Landsteiner suggested there were different blood groups A,B and O
      • 1902: AB was added
    • 1914-18: many soilders died from blood loss in the first world war
    • 1915: Richard Lewisohn found that adding sodium citrate stopped blood from clotting so it could be stored
    • 1916: Rous and turner found that adding citrate glucose solution allowed blood to be stored for longer.
    • Richard Weil found that blood could be stored in refrigerated units
    • 1917: first blood depot established for the battle of Cambrai using blood group O
