    • Cautery used to stop blood loss but transfusions banded as pateint often died
    • 1901: Karl Landsteiner suggested there were different blood groups A,B and O

    • 1914-18: many soilders died from blood loss in the first world war
    • 1915: Richard Lewisohn found that adding sodium citrate stopped blood from clotting so it could be stored
