What was Karl Landsteiner's significance?
He discovered in 1900s that there was blood groups and some people's blood wasn't compatible with others. Each blood cell had antibodies that would react to foreign blood.

Why did the discovery of blood groups make a big impact?
It was now understood why some early blood transfusions didn't work and it allowed the basis for blood and successful transfusions to be triggered
