  • Biology T2
    • Enzymes
      • Enzymes are catalysts created by living things
        • They have special shapes to catalyse
        • They need the right temperature and pH
    • Food Tests
      • Benedicts - Sugars
      • Iodine - Starch
      • Biuret - Proteins
      • Sudan 3 - Lipids
    • The Lungs
      • Air goes through trachea then splits into bronchi
      • Bonchi develop into bronchioles then alveoli
        • Alveoli carry out gas exchange - Swapping of oxygen into blood, and CO2 into lungs - diffusion
    • The heart
      • Contracts to pump blood around the body
        • Has a pace maker that contract the heart using electric impulses
      • Left and right atrium and ventricles
    • Blood Vessels
      • Arteries - carry blood under pressure. - strong and elastic
      • Capillaries - really small and carry blood close to cells to exchange substances- the wall, thin lumen
      • Veins - take blood back to heart - large lumen, elastic
    • Blood
      • Red blood cells - carry oxygen. Have no nucleus and biconcave dis to carry more oxygen
        • White blood cells defend infections
        • Platelets help blood clot
        • Plasma - carries everything
    • Cardiovascular disease
      • Stents - keep arteries open
      • Statins - reduce cholesterol in the blood
        • Has to be taken regularly
    • Health and disease
      • Diseases can interact e.g. problems with immune system leads to other diseases
      • Smoking, poor diet and stress can affect your health
    • Cancer
      • Malignant - cancerous - tumour grows and affects other cells
        • Smoking, obesity, UV exposure and infection can cause cancer
          • Benign - non cancerous - tumour grows until no more room and doesn't spread
      • Benign - non cancerous - tumour grows until no more room and doesn't spread
