- Asch's Variations
- Asch wanted to do further research in to conformity
- Asch carried out some variations of his original Procedure
- Situational Factors are 'Group Size' 'Unanimity' 'Task Difficulty
- Group Size
- You would expect bigger the group size, bigger conformity rates
- With 2 confederates, real participant conformed 14% on critical trials
- With 3 confederates conformity rose to 32%
- There was little change to conformity after this.
- Small majorities are easier to resist than larger ones
- Unanimity
- Asch, wanted to test the effect of having a supporter in the group,so the confederate agreed with the participant
- Having a dissenter broke the unanimity of the group, which made it easier for the participants to resist the pressure to conform
- Rate of conformity fell to 5.5%
- Task Difficulty
- Asch made the line judging task more difficult by making the comparison lines more similar
- Conformity levels increased so people are more likely to conform if they are less confident that they are correct
- ISI plays a role when task gets harder
