- A Classless Society
- Marxism
- The proletariat only have their labour to trade with.
- The bourgeoisie own the means of production and use this power to exploit workers.
- The two classes have very different interests - one values profits, the other values wages.
- These differences cause conflict between the two classes.
- Eventually, the lower classes will revolve against the upper classes and communism will exist.
- Functionalism
- Some occupations are more important to society than others.
- Important jobs require high ability and lots of training, so they have high rewards.
- Less important jobs do not require high ability nor lots of training, so they have low rewards.
- The lower classes look-up to the upper classes and aspire to be them, so they work harder.
- The upper classes look-down upon the lower classes don't want to be them, so they still work hard.
- This ensures that only the top people can be in the top jobs.
- New Right
- The Conservative Government have claimed that there are four factors which affect your life chances, class not being one of them.
- If someone doesn't receive adequate primary socialisation from their family, they may not know the difference between right and wrong or be encouraged to try hard at school
- Someone who lacks qualifications from education find it difficult to get into a good job. In 2011, just under half of those with no qualifications were in employment, compared to 8 in 10 of those with at least one qualification.
- Treatable conditions include issues such as illness, mental illness and drug abuse. Approximately 80% of problem drug users in England are unemployed. Most likely because employers are reluctant to employing potentially problematic workers.
