Conscription and rearmament
Hitlers build up of Germany's armed forces broke the Treaty of Versailles. In 1933 Hitler ordered that the army was to be increased by 300,000 men. 1935 Hitler publicly ordered that the army was to be increased to 550,000.

Britain signed an agreement allowing Germany to build a navy- this broke the Treaty of Versailles. It set a limit of Germany's army to one third of the size of Britain. The French were angry because they had not been consult

Hitler remilitarised the Rhineland when troops were ordered in to occupy this region of Germany. Broke the Treaty of Versailles again. Britain and France did nothing.

Austria
Hitler encouraged the Austrian Nazis to demand union with Germany, Hitler 'invaded' the country in March 1938. Britain and France did nothing. 99% of Austrians wanted a union with Germany.

Sudetenland and Munich
Hitler went to Czechoslovakia encouraging the Sudeten Germans to demand union with Germany. This time Britain and France did something. Britain and France appeased Hitler by giving him the Sudetenland.

Czechoslovakia
March 1939 Hitler's troops marched into the rest of Czechoslovakia. This broke the agreement signed at Munich six months earlier. The British and French realised that Hitler could not be trusted. Appeasement failed.

What was the Phoney War?
The Phoney War was an 8 month period at the start of WW2. For the first 6 months there was no fighting in the west. The German Military concentrated on the propaganda and the campaign in Poland. This gave Britain time to prepare for war.
