What is the Welsh Assembly and government?
The legislature and executive established in Wales following the 1997 referendum, elected on a five-yearly basis. Since 2020, the correct title for the body is Senedd, or Welsh Parliament.

What did the Government of Wales Act of 1998 do?
Set up the very first Welsh assembly, which had devolved powers to create secondary legislation in some policy areas. Such powers were equivalent to those previously held by the Secretary of State for Wales.

What did the Government of Wales Act of 2006 do?
Extended the powers of the Assembly to create Primary legislative powers if approved by a referendum and set up an executive government for them.

What was the result of the 2011 Welsh Assembly referendum?
64% voted for the Welsh Assembly to be given primary legislative powers in all areas where it had secondary legislative powers. This showed the growth in support for devolved powers in Wales.

What did the Wales Act of 2014 do?
Gave the Welsh government powers to replace certain UK taxes with Welsh specific taxes, representing the first major transfer of tax-related powers to the Welsh government.

What did the Wales Act of 2017 do?
Representing further transfer of important powers to Wales, the Welsh government received greater primary legislative powers in additional policy areas and control of their own electoral system and income tax, equalizing Welsh & Scottish devolution.

What did the Senedd and Elections (Wales) Act of 2020 do?
The act was passed using the devolved powers of the Welsh government, in which the Parliaments name was changed to Senedd Cymru (or Welsh Parliament, in English) and extended the franchise to 16 and 17 year olds in elections.
