World Wide Web - collection of information that has grown up on computers connected to the internet made available for anyone to access on webpages. Can be described as a multimedia service on the internet and indicates that it uses the HTTP.

The Internet
Network of computers each communicating with serveral other computers in the network, but not with all of them. It's a worldwide communication system linking computers worldwide with the use of telecommunication links e.g. satellites and phone lines.

Uniform Resource Locator - reference to the address of a resource on the internet.

HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol - an application protocol on the web. Defines how data is structured and transmitted and specifies how browsers and web services should act to requests.

IP address
Internet Protocol address - standard set of rules, ensures proper transfer of information, define how data is structured and what protocol signals are used, TCP/IP protcol, own unique address, allows messages and data to be routed to your address

Web browser
Software allows users to view and use the web pages on the net. Responsible for requesting the text and graphics of webpages from servers on the internet and assembling them for display - usually in HTML format. Can be used online or offline.

Web server
Computer designed to deliver Internet webpages within an intranet. processes requests from the internet infrastructure. Contains application software to enable transmission of content and makes use of client-server technology.

Web hosting
Provides users with access to a web server and web space to store a webpage(s). Web host company ensures the website is available online.

FTP
File Transfer Protocol - used to transfer files across the internet between client and server devices.

ISP
Internet Service Provider - direct links to the internet, acceps transmission from users over communication lines and passes these to the internet. Sells internet access to users and provides access to web servers to connect to search engines online.

Search Engine
A web based that searches for information using keywords or criteria and will return results as website links based on the criteria provided.

Cache - Web browser
Context of web applications, cache or temporary internet files allow browsers to download website images, data and documents for faster viewing in the future and a local copy of the information is kept.

Cookies
Small files downloaded to a computer when visiting a website whcih store previous activity on that site and user preferences which is used when the user accesses that site again. They can also track a user's internet history over a period of time.

Portal
A website that acts as a main entry point to a group of web services. Portals can require the user to logon and provide a range of services such as: email, links to other websites and search engines.

Website
A collection of HTML pages linked together on the world wide web.

Web Page
A page of information stored on the world wide web.
