Copying the behaviour of others

Vicarious Reinforcement
When a role model is praised or rewarded for their behaviour, the child is more likely to imitate them. If the model is punished for their behaviour the child is less likely to imitate them

Gender Schema
Is the mental building block of knowledge that conatins information about each gender - behaviours, clothes, activities, personality traits and roles linked to each sex

Gender Stereotype
Is when all males and all females are seen as being similar. Some people's gender schema's are made up of gender stereotypes e.g builders are men, secrateries are women.

Highly Gender Schematised
Is when gender is very important and information is organised according to gender appropriate and innapropriate roles

Gender Labelling
By 18 months a child knows whether they are a boy or a girl. By 2 they indentify the gender of other children but they do not know that everyone stays the same sex throughout life or that we say the same sex if we change our appearance

Gender Stablility
From the age of 3-5 the child realises that a persons sex is stable and remains the same throughout their life. However a child in this stage would be very confused in a change of appearance and would think that would effect your gender

Gender Constancy
At 6 years onwards a child will understand that gender remains constant in themselves and gender remains constant in other people despite changes in their appearance. The child now pays more attention to people of the same sex and adopts behaviour

Gender Disturbance
Not developing the gender indentity usually associated with one's sex

Modelling
A role model provides an example for the child
