List 4 building materials that may contain asbestos
Roofs (Asbestos Cement), Ceilings (Ceiling Tiles), Floors (Floor Tiles), Walls & Ceilings (Fire Breaks), Decorative Plasters (Artex), Insulation (Pipe Lagging)
2 of 27
List 3 types of work that may disturb Asbestos
Demolition, Refurbishment, Installation & Minor Repair Works
3 of 27
List the 2 key principles established by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
Impose a duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises, Impose controls on work with asbestos
4 of 27
With regard to the Control of Asbestos Regulations, define how to comply with the duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises
Carry out assesment of the premises to identify likely ACMs and instigate a plan for the management of those materials
5 of 27
With regard to the Control of Asbestos Regulations, define how to comply with the duty to impose controls on work with asbestos
Work on ACMs must be risk assessed & conducted according to a specific plan of work by trained workers.
6 of 27
List the 3 categories of work with asbestos
Licensed Work, Non-Licensed Work, Notifiable Non-Licensed Work
7 of 27
List the 2 elements of Non-Licensed Work
Short, Non continuous maintenance activities on materials in good condition where only low-fibre release is expected when disturbed, Removal without deterioration of non-degraded materials where the asbestos fibers are firmly bonded in a matrix
8 of 27
List the 2 elements of Notifiable Non-Licensed Work
Short, Non continuous maintenance activities on materials in good condition where only low-fibre release is expected when disturbed, Removal without deterioration of non-degraded materials where the asbestos fibers are firmly bonded in a matrix
9 of 27
List the 2 elements of Licensed Work
Longer duration (1 worker for more than 1 hour a week or 2 workers for more than 2 hours a week), On asbestos coating, asbestos lagging, Badly damaged asbestos insulating board or insulation
10 of 27
Explain the purpose of Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
Places a duty on any person responsible for, or who has some degree of control over the repair & maintenance of non-domestic premises to manage asbestos in those premises
11 of 27
To fulfill the duty of Regulation 4 list 4 things the duty holder must do
Carry out assessment to identify ACMs & any potential ACM so the location & condition is known, Assume materials contain ACMs unless evidence exits to say otherwise, Make & keep an up to date asbestos register, Monitor & review assessment & the plan
12 of 27
Explain the term 'Good Condition' as it relates to asbestos
The asbestos fibers in the material are not free to leave the material and form an airbourne dust
13 of 27
Explain the term 'Damaged but acceptable condition' as it relates to asbestos
ACM is damaged but the asbestos fibers in the material are not free to leave the material and form an airbourne dust
14 of 27
Explain the term 'Poor Condition' as it relates to asbestos
The asbestos fibers are loose and can become airborne or are likely to be disturbed
15 of 27
How should an ACM in good condition be managed?
Labelled where possible & left undisturbed
16 of 27
How should an ACM in damaged but acceptable condition be managed?
They can be encapsulated (covered or otherwise made safe), labelled and left in place
17 of 27
How should an ACM in poor condition be managed?
They should be removed
18 of 27
If a premises is to be refurbished or demolished what must be done with regard to asbestos management
A Refurbishment / Demolition survey must be undertaken instead of a management survey. This type of survey is more destructive & invasive and is usually only undertaken by a competent surveyor.
19 of 27
Define the purpose of Regulation 8 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
Regulation 8 restricts work with asbestos to employers who hold a licence
20 of 27
Define the purpose of Regulation 3 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
Regulation 3 allows for an exception to the licensing requirements stated in Regulation 8. The work where these licensing requirements do not apply is known as non-licensed work.
21 of 27
Define the term sporadic and of low intensity as it relates to non-licensed work
The concentration of asbestos in the air does not exceed 0.6 fibers per cubic centimeter measured over a 10 minute period.
22 of 27
Explain what the control limit for asbestos is
The control limit for asbestos is 0.1. fibers per cubic centimeter averaged over a 4 hour period.
23 of 27
With regard to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, what requirements is licensed work subject to?
The full requirements of Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
24 of 27
With regard to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, what requirements is non-licensed work exempt from?
