Unit 4 Absorption in the Small Intestine

?
Adaptions are:
Long large Surface Area for efficient absorption. Folded, further increases SA. Villi, finger like projections which increase SA. Thin Epithelium-short diffusion pathway. Epithelium cells have micro-villi. The Villi have a good blood supply.

Where does Absorption happen?
Diffusion, Facilitated Diffusion and Active Transport.
2 of 5
What is Diffusion?
Net movement of substances from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. It is a passive process.
3 of 5
What is Facilitated Diffusion?
Involves a carrier protein and is a passive process.
4 of 5
What is Active Transport?
Substances are moved against a concentration gradient. This requires a supply of energy. This energy comes from ATP..
