African charter on Human Rights
International Human Rights charter intended to promote and protect human rights and basic freedoms in Africa

NGO formed in 1961 that campaigns for human rights and has approximately 7 million members.

Asylum
Protection from political persecution granted by a state to an individual from another state.

Convention against torture and cruel treatment (1984)
A Human Rights treaty that offers specific definitions of torture and the responsibilities for preventing crime.

Convention on the rights of the child (1989)
A Human Rights treaty that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children.

Crimes against Humanity
Widespread or systematic murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation and other inhumane act intentionally committed against civilian populations before or during a war.

Cultural relativism
The principle that an individual person's beliefs and activities should be understood by others in terms of that individual's own culture.

United Nations economic and social council
Responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment and economic and social progress.

The first regional agreement on Human Rights.

Genocide
Violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group.

Humanitarian intervention
A state's use of military force against another state in order to end Human Rights violations happening in the state which the military action is being directed to.

Human Rights
Basic claims and entitlements that everyone in the world possesses as a result of being a Human being. Introduced in 1948 by the United Nations.

Human Rights watch
An NGO that conducts research into Human Rights and advocates for Human Rights.

Interdependent
The idea that the protection of one Human Right helps to protect all the other Human Rights.

Internally displaced people
People who are forced to move from their home but are still located within their state. Happens as a result of conflict, natural disasters and development and economic changes.

International criminal court (ICC)
An international tribunal formed in 2002 for the prosecution of crimes against humanity.

International humanitarian law
A set of rules which seek for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict.

Negative rights
Rights that don't require intervention by an outside agency such as the right to live.

Positive rights
Rights that are protected by authority, both local and global and include goods and services that allow people to survive.

Refugees
People who have been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster.

Rome statute
Treaty that established the ICC and established four core crimes which are genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.

Social contract
The idea that individuals give up their freedom in society to an authority in exchange for the protections of their individual rights.

Stateless person
Someone who is not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law.

UN Human Rights council
Part of the UN responsible for monitoring and upholding international Human Rights. Established in 2006 and replaced the UN commision on Human Rights.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Introduced in 1948 and is often used as a tool to apply diplomatic and moral pressure to governments. Consists of 31 articles outlining the principles of Human Rights.

War crimes
Inhumane acts against civilians who are not enemy nationals. Examples include torture, wilful killing and inhumane treatment.
