Transition metals definitions

?
Transition metal
An element that can form an atom or ion with a partially filled d-orbital.
1 of 10
Complex ion
Formed when pairs from a number of neutral molecules or ions (ligands) are donated by a coordinate covalent bond to a central metal ion
2 of 10
Ligand
An anion/molecule with a lone pair of electrons that forms a co-ordinate covalent bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
3 of 10
co-ordinate bond
A shared pair of electrons between 2 atoms, one atom provides both electrons
4 of 10
Co-ordination number
The number of coordinate bonds to a central atom or ion in a complex
5 of 10
Ligand replacement
A reaction which involves substituting one ligand with another.
6 of 10
Monodentate ligand
A ligand which only uses 1 lone pair of electrons to form a co-ordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex
7 of 10
Bidentate ligand
A ligand which uses 2 pairs of electrons to form 2 coordinate bonds with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
8 of 10
Polydentate ligand
A ligand which uses many lone pairs of electrons to form more than 2 coordinate bonds with a central atom or ion in a complex
9 of 10
Chelate
A complex containing polydentate ligands.
