Through direct observation of him during his lifetime.
They were imitated and adopted by successive generations of Muslims.

The generations who passed down the hadith and are highly honoured Muslims for preserving the Prophet’s guidance.

Checks were made to distinguish genuine accounts from unreliable and forged ones. So based on establishing the chain of narrators of each Hadith back to the prophet or his companions.

Why are sira accounts less authoritative than the Hadith?
Early biographies of the Prophet and is one of the most important sources about the prophet’s life and beginning of Islam.
The same rigour was not applied to confirm their authenticity but they are still seen as very valuable.
