Why has global tourism increased?
Global tourism has increases because of double income, an increase in disposable income, package holidays, jet aircraft and fewer children (lower birth rate).

Cities can develop tourism by hosting sporting events, constructing new attractions, and having cheaper, better quality hotels.

One external factor is the recession because people have less money to spend. Another external factor is terrorist threats because people don't want to fly. A final external factor is a natural disaster, for example a volcanic cloud stopping flights.

Eco-lodges and furnishings are produced by the locals and are built from local materials, for example wood. There are water butts to catch the rain, and water only runs for 2 hours a day. The lodges use solar power and Masai provide food and guides.

Extreme tourism is an adventure, dangerous and remote.

What are the environmental impacts of extreme tourism in Antarctica?
The tourists go too close to wildlife, which impacts on habitats and breeding. Oil slickas are caused by ships. And the waste from the ships is dumped into the sea.

What are the solutions to the impacts of extreme toursim in Antarctica?
Tour operators must be members of IAATO and abide by Antarctic Treaty. Not allowed in some areas (Bird Island). Tour operator must have permit. Ships of only 500 allowed.

90% is a national park. Rare species that were noted by Charles Darwin, for example the Marine iguana, Giant tortoise and Blue footed booby.

What are the benefits of eco-tourism in Galapogas?
£25 from every visitor goes to conservation. Gives the lcals a good standard of living, without harming the environment. Locals do boat trips, work in hotels, give guides and sell souvenirs.

What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is when something develops BUT doesn't harm the environment or the locals. Also it preserves the environment and traditions for future generations.
