Bitmap
-The image itself is stored as a map showing the position of each pixel -Details of the colour of each pixel are stored, which means there is a huge amount of data -Files to store bitmap images are very large
1 of 10
Bitmaps cont.
-Bitmaps are big files so they take up lots of space on a disk and take a long time to upload -Bitmaps can lose their sharpness if enlarged or reduced in size -They are made up of individual pixels that can be set to a colour.
2 of 10
Vectors
-Information about how to draw the image is stored rather than the image itself -They are stored as a series of equations which tell the computer how to draw it -Only equations are stored so the file size is smaller
3 of 10
Vectors cont.
-They are used for precise images such as maps, technical drawings/plans -Uploaded and downloaded quicker due to smaller file size

Advantages of Vector Graphics
-Vector graphics have very small file size so the viewer doesn't have to wait long to view the image -Ideal for use on the web -Much easier to edit and doesn't lose the quality -Easy to zoom in and out on a vector image
5 of 10
Disadvantages of Vector Graphics
-Only suitable for images with a limited number of colours -No good for images with continuous colours like a photograph

Tools and Techniques for Manipulating Still Images
-Zoom -Selection -Transforming:using rotation or reflection -Sizing -Scaling -Copying -Moving -Layering -Colour palette -Gradient tool -Touch-up -Red-eye -Smoothing

GIF Files
These files use 8 bits for colour, but with a maximum of 256 colours. GIF files use compression and are only used for simple graphics. Also uses transparency.

JPEG Files
These use 24 bits for colour and have a maximum of 16.7 million colours. They also use compression and are used for images with continuous colour (e.g. photos). Also uses transparency
