Clues

  • data presented in statistical form, e.g. as graphs, pie charts or tables of statistics, that count or measure something (10, 4)
  • data presented in verbal or visual form, e.g. as words or quotations from interviewees, rather than as statistics (11, 4)
  • data that already exist and have previously been generated or collected by other people, researchers or organisations (9, 4)
  • data that the researcher actually generates or collects by undertaking research (7, 4)
  • in qualitative research, this refers to impressions, thoughts or feelings that the researcher writes up about things that happened that day, e.g. how various interviews went (5, 5)
  • moral issues arising from research projects (including their aims and methods), such as how to maintain privacy and confidentiality of information collected about people, gaining informed consent from participants and not causing harm to participants (7, 6)
  • people who participate in research should be given information on the project before they freely and voluntarily agree to take part (8, 7)
  • situations where the researcher collects evidence without informing research participants or subjects that they are carrying out research (6, 8)
  • the ethical requirement that information gathered during research should not be divulged to others unless otherwise agreed in advance or unless there is a legal requirement to disclose it (15)
