Enthalpy of formation
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states in standard conditions.
1 of 12
Enthalpy of atomisation
The enthalpy cange when 1 mole of an element in its standard state is turned into its gaseous atoms.
2 of 12
Enthalpy of sublimation
The enthalpy change when a solid metal turns into its gaseous atoms. This is numerically the same as enthalpy of atomisation.
3 of 12
Enthalpy of dissociation (bond dissociation enthalpy)
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of covalent bonds is broken into 2 gaseous atoms or free radicals.
4 of 12
First ionisation energy
The energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous atoms with a +1 charge.
5 of 12
Second ionisation energy
The energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous ions with +1 charge to form 1 mole of gaseous atoms with a +2 charge.
6 of 12
First electron affinity
The enthalpy change that occurs when 1 mole of gaseous atoms gain 1 mole of electrons to form 1 mole of ions with a -1 charge.
7 of 12
Second electron affinity
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous atoms with a -1 charge gains 1 electron per ion to produce ions with a -2 charge.
8 of 12
Enthalpy of lattice formation
The standard enthalpy change when 1 mole of an ionic compound is formed from its constituent ions in the gaseous form under standard conditions.
9 of 12
Enthalpy of lattice dissociation
The standard enthalpy change when 1 mole of an ionic lattice is separated into its constituent ions in their gaseous form under standard conditions.
10 of 12
Enthalpy of hydration
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous ions becomes hydrated (dissolved in water).
11 of 12
Enthalpy of solution
The standard enthalpy change when 1 mole of an ionic solution dissolves in a large enough amount of water to ensure that the dissolved ions are well separated and do not interact with on another.
