Theories of Sociology: Postmodernism

What do Postmodernists argue?
Postmodernists reject meta-narratives and the idea there can only be one explanation for everything. We live in a pick-n-mix society where we can piece together our reality.
1 of 8
What has been the effect of globalisation?
Increased globalisation through areas such as transport, technology and communication has led to a decline in national identity. We now live in glocal communities
2 of 8
What does Lyotard argue?
All theories are trying to make sense of society but this cannot be done. Society is a group of isolated individuals linked by weak social bonds.

What does Baudrillard argue?
People are isolated individuals. Knowledge is power and something that can be bought or sold and what we know about the world comes from businesses or government. The media and new forms of technology are powerful tools.

In what way does the media play a large role in globalisation?
People have limited direct experiences of the world and instead there is a hyper-reality as society is based on images that are fed by the media.Baudrillard suggests the Gulf War never happened, it was a media construction

What is simulacra?
Consumption has moved people away from relationships and closer to a consumer lifestyle. The objects we buy have little to do with the object itself but the meaning it holds for us. We often purchase an image rather than a function

What does Bauman argue?
Bauman uses the analogy of liquid to explain postmodernity and solid to explain modernity as nothing is permanent in postmodern society

What is Gidden's Structuration theory?
We are in a period of high modernity. Structural theorists and action theories are both outdated and no longer relevant. Structuration theory bridges the gap between the macro and the micro, suggesting there is a third way for sociology in the 21stC
