What is the Eucharist?
A sacrament of the Church where the bread is body of Christ and wine is blood of Christ

What is a sacrament?
Luther - Must include the word of God and an outward Sacramental symbol. Augustine - a sign of sacred things sharing a likeness of that which it signified (considered inadequate)

How many sacraments are there?
Roman Catholic Church - seven: baptism, conformation, eucharist, penance, marriage, ordination, last rites. Luther - baptism and eucharist (and penance)

What is transubstantion?
Through the priest, God turns bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.

What is substance?
Something's essential nature, makes the thing what it is.

What is accident?
Its outward appearances e.g. shape, colour, size, contingent or non-essential.

What is the theory of transubstantion?
That the accidents of the bread and wine remain unchanged where as the substances changes from the bread and wine to the body and blood of Christ.

How does Luther criticise RCC?
Only using bread and not wine; transubstantiation; the doctrine of the sacrifice

What issue divided the reformers?
Real presence

According to Luther, the Eucharist:
1. Affirms the promises of grace and forgiveness, 2. Identifies those to whom promises are made, 3. declares the death of the one who made the promises

Real Presence
Christ's words in the institution of the last supper where a real presence. We do not know how Christ is present only that Christ is in the sacraments.

Consubstantion
There is no change in substance: there is the simulation presence of both bread and the body of Christ, of both wine and the body of christ, one and the same time
