What is Leisure?
When all activities to do with work have been completed there is time left over, and this time is a person’s leisure time. During this time, people choose to do what they enjoy doing rather than what they have to do.

What is sport and physical recreation?
Sport is a form of physical activity that usually has some element of competition and is usually governed by a set of rules. Physical recreation is participating in any physical activity that refreshes the body and mind.

What is meant by arts and entertainment?
Arts and entertainment refers to things that take place outside your home which ‘entertain you’. Again this can include things that you watch, e.g. a musical at a theatre, or things that you can actively take part in, e.g. bingo, youth theatre, dance

What is countryside recreation?
Countryside recreation can take place in National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), on the coastline, or on the moors. A place is visited not just for its landscape and scenery, which may be mountains, hills, valleys, lakes

What is meant by home based leisure?
It is not always necessary to leave your home to take part in leisure activities. Home-based leisure includes: o Music – including playing and listening o Television related entertainment o Crafts o Home improvements and gardening o Internet-based

What is activity and play based leisure?
Play-based leisure is activities that are mainly associated with children. Examples range from ‘paint a plate’ to bouncy castles for children. Activity-based leisure is a fast-growing component of the leisure industry.

What are the key components of the travel industry?
Travel agents, tour operators, tourist information, online travel services, accommodation and catering, transportation

What are travel agents?
There are three main types of travel agent in the UK, and they all sell holidays not only face to face in the shops, but also online and by phone. o Multiples: A travel agent with hundreds of branches, for example Thomas Cook

What is a tour operator?
The difference between a tour operator and a travel agent is that a tour operator puts the holidays (flights, accommodation and sometimes transfers) together and features them in a brochure. These holidays are then sold to the customer

What is meant by tourist information?
There are over 500 tourist information centres in England. They are usually found in town centres, airports, stations or countryside areas such as National Parks. The information centres may be operated by the local council or park authority

What is an online travel service?
Online travel services include travel companies and airlines that only take bookings online, such as ebookers.com and Expedia.co.uk. Airlines such as easyjet take over 95% of their bookings online

What is accommodation and catering?
Where people stay, i.e. a hotel or a bed and breakfast and the food they eat

What is meant by transportation?
o Air travel can be by aeroplane or helicopter o Sea transportation includes passenger and car ferries, hovercraft, hydrofoil, catamaran, steamers, and cruise ships o Road transport methods include private car, hired car, coach, bus, bicycle or motor

What is a visitor attraction?
A visitor attraction is a place that offers ‘amusement, enjoyment, education and entertainment’. Attractions can be visited from a person’s home (this makes them part of the leisure industry) or while a person is on holiday in the UK or overseas

Leisure facilities often offer a range of products/services to appeal to as many different types of customer as possible. A theatre, for example, may try to attract more customers by having a range of different types of show
