Leisure
What people do for fun and recreation in their free time.

Tourism
Visiting another place for leisure, or to visit friends and relatives (VFR).

Domestic tourist
Someone that visits a destination that is in his/her own country.

Outbound/international tourist
Someone who travels out of a country to visit a destination in another country.

In-bound tourism
Visiting a destination from one country, having travelled from another country.

Mass tourism
Organised travel to a destination by a large number of visitors.

Resort
Resorts are places tourists visit for holidays or recreation and where tourism is an important part of the local economy.

Peak/high season
The busiest time of the year.

Shoulder season
The period of time either side of the peak season where there is an immediate flow of visitors.

Out of season
A time of year when a destination or facility has fewer visitors. Some facilities/attractions may close.

Transport modes
The means of transport available to tourists such as road, rail, air and sea.

Gateway
These are the international entry and exit point to a country, e.g. London Heathrow airport, the port of Dover and Eurostar's St Pancreas International.

Terminal
One end of a transport link, e.g. London's Kings Cross/London Paddington.

International Airport
An airport from which airlines operate flights to and from other countries.

Short-haul
A flight which is less than about 4-5 hours in length, within the Mediterranean Basin/Europe, e.g. Spain.

Long-haul
A flight which is more than 5-6 hours in length, outside the Mediterranean Basin/Europe, e.g. Mexico.

Flag-carrier airline
A traditional airline which is regarded as a country's national airline, e.g. British Airways, Air France, Air Canada.

Budget Airline
Cheap, no frills airline, e.g. EasyJet

No-Frills
The policy of budget airlines which is to keep costs low by charging for extras such as food and drink.

Travel Agent
High street and online companies give advice to customers and sell holidays on behalf of tour operators. They also sell other products such as currency, car hire, insurance.

Tour operators
Tour operators are organisations that put together holidays (accomodation, transport, excursions, transfers) and sell them through travel agents or directly to the public.
