the party needed socialism which meant they needed a working class, needed to evade hostile forgeign powers, remove classes like the Kulaks, industry would lead to an agricultural revolution.

projects like magnitigorsk was created, resources were given to heavy industry, consumers were neglected, gains in industry, gaps in infrastrucure, rapind urbanisation, shortage of labour, work force changed, agriculture was not a priority.

Why did the 1st plan not run smoothly?
it was not fully thought out, when resources were moved there was no thought about the impacts, set of crude targets, not enough specialists, government had to bribe workers.

What were the key features of the 2nd plan?
better prepared, began to benefit from improving agriculture, consumers gained attention, productivity and wages increased, gains in electricity, coal and rail, workers had more imcetives. better experienced, danger of being purged.

Alexi Stskhanov was a miner who in one shift he cut 102 tonnes of coal which was 16x the average, he became a hero with people aiming to best his record, they were unpopular and were often victimised or attacked.

ambitious targets, approach to war changed these targets, crisis were caused by the bad infrastrucure, relief was gained with the invaison of poland and the baltic states, more economic potential.

What are the impacts on the soviet economy?
USSR could stand attack, couldnt have defense and high living standards, we cant trust all statistics, economy grew 5-6% each year to 1940, change in the workforce adn a population shift.

What were the attitudes of some workers?
many welcomed the new conditions, many now had good living standards, less enthusiastic workers suffered, cant judge the effect of propaganda, unskilled workers were generally less happy, it became dangerous to speak out.

What were the effects of industry on women?
they were key to success with 10 million joining the workforce in the 1930's, they were often less well paid, they contributed to all areas of labour.

How did convict labour affect industry?
this also grew in the 1930's, many were unenthusiastic about industrial programmes given the hard conditions, many died during work to the Baltic Sea Canal.
