Main idea behind this theory?
Collectivist vs. Individualistic culture. Collectivist - more focused on group harmony compared to Individualistic culture which is more concerned about how the individual is feeling.

Levine et al
Asked people from 11 countries (including collectivist) 'if you found someone who had all the desired characteristics, but there was no love would you marry them' - yes = collectivist , no = individualist

Hatfield + Rapson
Disagreed with Levine et al as proving the difference. They found that both individualistic + collectivist cultures love is seen as a prerequisite for marriage, but passionate love is a luxure for LEDC

Brings up important point: wealth of the area. in a poor area the only way for especially females to survive is to marry a man , whereas in a wealthier country we can be more picky + choose who we want to be with

Seepersad et al
Korean vs. US students. Hypothesis: US students would be more lonely ==> found that in fact that was true

AO2 of seepersad et al
may be due to the fact that koreans have more of a work ethic than US. Also shows how maybe in the individualistic cultures we need to stop placing such an emphasis on relationships because it can cause psychological distress+causes a negative impact

Moore + Leung
AA + CA.Wanted to find out if the roots of the collectivist culture were more prominant + deep rooted to overcome effects of individualistic culture. Found higher % of AA in a relationship , AA men less romantic than CA,Romantic love endorsed by both

Johnson + Holmes
Looked at films in box office from 1995-2005, gave pps a questionnaire about beliefs + expectations of RR and found they correlated to the types of films watched by those pps

AO2 of johnson + holmes
collectivists have more of a work ethic . the length of the relationship wasnt recorded , so can't compare - although the AA may have been in relationships, could only be ST

Epstein
Those with arranged marriages = lower divorce rate
11 of 14
AO2 of Epstein
Due to the fact that maybe they aren't allowed/forbidden to divorce partner
12 of 14
Xiaohe + Whyte
Since the arranged marriage rate has dropped from 70% => 10% , women have reported feeling much more happier because they married for love

Pinker
Being in love could be said to be evolutionary advantage because it promotes survival, those in LT relationships have lower mortality rates+therefore is universal. CAN LINK THIS TO IDEA OF WEALTH,now modern medicine-not so fussed but in LEDC no choice
