he didnt want to punish Germany too much as she may look for revenge, he stiill wants to trade with Germany and he is concerned with the rise of Communism and want to leave Germany as a barrier against it- she has to be strong enough to fight,

He thought all countires had a part they played so Germany shouldnt be blamed itself but she did believe it should be punished a little but not so much that she wants revenge,

He called for Germany to be smashed and for no mercy to be shown so Germany couldnt start another war, he wanted Germany destroyed so was nicknamed 'the Tiger'

Why did he want Germany to be punished so harshly?
He had seen France invade twice before- one in 1871 and one in 1914 and would do anything to stop it happening again. France was in line for a future attack by the Germans and they feared this so this is why he wanted G to be smashed,
