- Path of river was it flows downhill. - Upper course = closest to source. - Middle course. - Lower course = closest to mouth.
1 of 8
What is a long profile?
- Shows how gradient (steepness) changes over the different courses.
2 of 8
What is a cross profile?
- Shows what a cross-section of the river looks like.
3 of 8
Upper course
- Steep gradient.- Valley: v-shaped, steep sides. - Channel: narrow and shallow.
4 of 8
Middle course
- Medium gradient.- Valley: gently sloping valley sides. - Channel: wider, deeper.
5 of 8
Lower course
- Gentle gradient.- Valley: - very wide, almost flat. - Channel: very wide, deep.
6 of 8
Vertical erosion
- Deepens river valley (and channel), making it v-shaped. - Dominant in upper-course of river. - High turbulence causes the rough, angular particles to be scraped along river bed, causing intense downwards erosion.
7 of 8
Lateral erosion
- Widens river valley (and channel) during formation of meanders. - Dominant in middle and lower course.
