How do Humans Influence/Change the Weather?
- Increase Greenhouse Gases by industry & power stations therefore Global Warming
- Acid Rain which can kill fish + plants
- Increase Temp in urban areas
Decrease + Increase Wind in urban areas
1 of 16
What are the Consequences of the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?
- Increase in Temp = Glacial Melt + Drought
- Increase in Unpredictable weather + Blurring of seasons
- Increase in Rainfall events
- Increase in Frequency + Severity of Hurricanes
2 of 16
Are All Consequences of the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect negative?
No
- Some Areas are seeing an increase in agriculture yields
- Moderation of cloud temp improves quality of life
3 of 16
What are the Causes of the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?
- Burning fossil fuels increase concentration of greenhouse gases (e.g. power stations, factories)
- Deforestation increase amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
- Cattle Farming increase amount of methane released
- Car Emissions
Caused by an increase in green
4 of 16
What are the Causes of a Rise in Car Emissions?
- World's population has increased so quickly there's an increase in demand for food + products therefore more greenhouse gases
- The world's population is getting richer so there is more demand for goods therefore more greenhouse gases
5 of 16
Is Global Warming/Greenhouse Effect Natural?
YES
It is a natural process
Without it there would be no life on Earth
Global Warming caused by humans = Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
6 of 16
How have Enhanced Greenhouse Effect impacted Urban Climates?
Urban climates are different to Rural climates
Tend to have:
- Hotter Temp
- Higher Rainfall
- Less Snow
- Slower wind but Quicker in wind tunnels
- Less Humidity
7 of 16
Why are Urban Areas hotter than rural areas?
Urban Heat Island Effect
Example: London
8 of 16
Reasons for Urban Heat Island Effect?
- Lots of Glass surfaces - reflects sun
- Lots of warmth generated by Central Heating
- Surface type + building materials are darker
- Lots of warmth from sun absorbed + released at night
- Pollution traps Solar Radiation, increasing temp
- Human activity
9 of 16
Why is there HIGHER Rainfall in Urban areas than Rural areas?
There is a Link to higher temp in cities
- Air in cities is warmer because air rises + as it rises it cools, condensing and precipitates (i.e. rains)
- Convergence
- Air Pollution so there's more condensation nuclei
Warm air is forced to rise due to build
10 of 16
Why is there both More & Less Wind in Urban areas than Rural areas?
Wind is SLOWER in cities due to Frictional Drag from buildings as Buildings act as a wind break BUT
There are areas of FASTER, turbulent air due to the Wind Tunnel Effect caused by wind flowing through narrow spaces in between tall buildings
11 of 16
What is the Funneling + Higher-speed Wind called?
The Venturi Effect
12 of 16
What is Humidity?
The amount of Water Vapour in the air
13 of 16
Why is Humidity LOWER in Urban areas than Rural areas?
- Temp is Higher in cities because Air is Warmer
- Warmer Air can hold more water because Relative Humidity is Lower
- Drainage systems remove water from city so Less Evaporation = Less Water Vapour
14 of 16
What is the Difference between the Greenhouse Effect & Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?
Greenhouse Effect is a natural process
&
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect is caused by humans + causing Climate Change

Both processes cause Global Warming
BUT
Enhanced greenhouse effect is more extreme due to climate change + humans
15 of 16
Why is there LOWER rates of Snow in Urban areas than Rural areas?
Snow needs cool, cold + wet conditions
Cities tend to be Too Warm for snow
