One valve on the right ________, another pumps blood ___________. A 3rd on the left receives _________. The fourth pumps __________.
"receives blood"; "out towards the lungs"; "oxygen rich blood from the lungs"; "nutrient rich blood into the body".
1 of 19
How many valves in the heart? What do they do?
Four. Two atrioventricular valves (locasted between the atrium and the ventrical on either side of the heart), the other two valves regulate blood flow out of the heart.
2 of 19
Heart shape? Approx size?
Cone shaped. "fist" - approx 10cm.
3 of 19
What are the three layers of the heart?
Endocardium, myocardium, epicardium.
4 of 19
Describe the epicardium.
It covers the heart, wraps around the roots of the great blood vessels, and adheres to the heart wall to a protective sac.
5 of 19
Describe the Myocardium.
Strong muscle tissue that powers the hearts pumping action.
6 of 19
Describe the endocardium.
The innermost layer that lines the terior structures of the heart.
7 of 19
What are the two upper chambers of the heart?
The left and right atrium.
8 of 19
What is the left atrium responsible for?
receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
9 of 19
What is the right atrium responsible for?
receives deoxygenated blood returning from other parts of the body.
10 of 19
How are the atria connected to the ventricles? How do the atria empty.
Valves. They empty into the corresponding ventricle below.
11 of 19
What happens in the ventricles?
Blood empties onto them from the atrium above, and it is then pumped to where it needs to go.
12 of 19
What happens in the right ventricle?
De-ox blood received from the R atrium, then pumps the blood along to the lungs to get oxygenated.
13 of 19
What happens in the left ventricle?
Ox blood from the L atrium, then sends it to the aorta.
14 of 19
What happens in the aorta.
It branches into the systemic arterial network that supplies the whole body.
15 of 19
What does the left aortic valve do?
manageds flow from the left ventricle into the aorta.
16 of 19
What does the pulmonary valve do?
manages blood flow out of the right ventricle into the pulmonary arteries.
17 of 19
Describe and name ventricular contractions.
they force blood out of the heart through pulmonary and aortic valves; these contractions are called "systole"
18 of 19
What is it when blood flows from the atria to the ventricles?
Diastole.
