The endocrine system?
works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions in the body, acts much slower than the nervous system but has very widespread and powerful effects. Various glands in the body like the thyroid gland release hormones.

What do hormones do?
Secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cell in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone.

What does the thyroid gland produce?
Thyroxine, it affects cells in the heart by increasing heart rate, as well as increasing metabolic rates. This in turn will affect growth rates

What is the major endocrine gland?
The pituitary gland (master gland) located in the brain controls the release or hormones from all other endocrine glands in the body.

What is a gland?
An organ in the body which synthesises substances such as hormones.

What is the fight or flight response?
The way the animal responds when stressed. The body becomes physiologically aroused in readiness to fight an aggressor or in some cases flee.

What is adrenaline?
Hormone produced by adrenal glands which is part of the body's immediate stress response system. Has strong effect on cardiovascular cells in the body as it stimulates the heart rate and contracts blood vessels.

What is the sympathetic state?
The physiologically aroused state which prepares the body for flight or fight. When a stressor is perceived the hypothalamus triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the automimic nervous system, now the ANS changes from its normal resting state(par

What are the biological changes associated with sympathetic state?
Increased heart rate/ breathing rate
inhibits digestion (prevents)
prevents salvia production
contracts rectum

What is the parasympathetic state?
The body's normal resting state returns the body to its normal resting state after flight or fight has been completed. Otherwise known as the rest or digest response.

Talk about the pituitary gland?
Otherwise known as the master endocrine gland, located in the brain. It controls release of other hormones in all other endocrine glands in the body.
