- Controls release of hormones from all other endocrine glands in body
- Major endocrine gland called 'pituitary gland'
- Hormones: secreted in bloodstream affecting any cell in body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
- Endocrine & ANS: fight or flight
- 1. When stressor perceived: hypothalamus triggers activity in sympathetic branch of ANS
- Changes ANS from parasympathetic (normal resting) to sympathetic state (physiologically aroused)
- 2. Stress hormone adrenaline released from adrenal medulla into blood stream
- 3. Adrenaline triggers psychological changes in target organs in body (inhibits digestion, inhibits saliva production, contracts rectum
- 4. When threat passed, parasympathetic nervous system returns body to resting state, reduces activities that were increased by sympathetic branch
