  • Endocrine system: works w/ nervous system to control vital functions via action of hormones
    • Glands: organs in body that produce hormones
      • Major endocrine gland called 'pituitary gland'
        • Controls release of hormones from all other endocrine glands in body
    • Hormones: secreted in bloodstream affecting any cell in body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
    • Endocrine & ANS: fight or flight
      • 1. When stressor perceived: hypothalamus triggers activity in sympathetic branch of ANS
        • Changes ANS from parasympathetic (normal resting) to sympathetic state (physiologically aroused)
      • 2. Stress hormone adrenaline released from adrenal medulla into blood stream
      • 3. Adrenaline triggers psychological changes in target organs in body (inhibits digestion, inhibits saliva production, contracts rectum
      • 4. When threat passed, parasympathetic nervous system returns body to resting state, reduces activities that were increased by sympathetic branch
