What is the endocrine system and its function?
The endocrine system is a series of glands which communicate messages to the organs of the body to control its vital functions.

Glands are organs which produce and secrete hormones.

What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messages released from glands into the bloodstream which affect target organs in the body.

What is the 'master gland', and why do they call it that?
The pituitary gland, controlled by the hypothalamus, is nicknamed the 'master gland' as it releases hormones which regulate the endocrine system/control the release of other hormones.

What hormone is secreted by the pituitary gland?
The pituitary gland secretes oxytocin.

The thyroid gland secretes thryroxin.

Insulin is secreted by the pancreas.
