Name the three layers of the Earth
Crust, Mantle and Core
1 of 16
Name three layers of the atmosphere
Mesosphere, Stratosphere, Troposphere
2 of 16
Name the three types of rock
Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
3 of 16
How are igneous rocks formed?
Formed by cooling magma When magma gets forced up through the earths crust, it cools and solidifies and forms igneous rock (extrusive igneous) If the magma cools beneath the surface, intrusive igneous rock will form
4 of 16
What does the size of igneous crystals depend on?
The size of the crystals depends on how quickly the molten rock cooled: if it cools quickly, the crystals are small and if it cools slowly, the crystals are large
5 of 16
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
These rocks are formed when transported and deposited sediments are compressed and therefore, the water is squeezed out from between the pieces of rock so that they are cemented to form a rock
6 of 16
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
These rocks are formed as the Earth's movements cause sedimentary or igneous rocks to be deeply buried or squeezed. Therefore the rocks are heated and put under great pressure. They do not melt but the minerals that they contain are changed chemicall

What is weathering?
Weathering is the wearing away of rocks.
8 of 16
What are the three different types of weathering?
Physical, Biological and Chemical
9 of 16
Give an example of physical weathering
Freeze-thaw
10 of 16
Give an example of chemical weathering
Acid rain
11 of 16
Give an example of biological weathering
Burrowing Animals
12 of 16
What is erosion?
Erosion is the movement of the broken pieces away from the site of weathering.
13 of 16
What is acid rain?
Fossil fuels naturally contain sulfur compounds. These produce sulfur dioxide, a gas with a sharp, choking smell, when the fuel is burned. When sulfur dioxide dissolves in water droplets in clouds, it makes the rain more acidic than normal.

How does global warming happen?
Sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. The ground warms up and heat is emitted from the Earth’s surface. Some heat escapes into space but some is absorbed by greenhouse gases. It is re-emitted and does not escape. The Earth’s atmosphere warms up

Where does the sun rise and sun set?
The sun appears to rise in the East, set in the West and be due South at midday. This is because the Earth turns from west to East and therefore the sun appears to move from East to West.
