Test for reducing sugars
Benedict's test - add Benedict's reagent to the sample and heat in water bath, colour change from blue to brick red, positive test will produce a precipitate
1 of 6
Test for non-reducing sugars
Benedict's test - add dilute hydrochloric acid and heat sample in water bath, neutralise with hydrogencarbonate, and repeat test for reducing sugars, if solution remains blue it contains no forms of sugar
2 of 6
Test for glucose
Test strips - coated in a reagent and dipped in the solution and change colour dependent on concentration of glucose
3 of 6
Test for starch
Iodine - add potassium iodide solution to the sample, if starch is present colour changes to blue-black
4 of 6
Test for poteins
Biuret test - make solution alkaline by adding sodium hydroxide, add copper sulfate solution, colour change to purple is protein is present
5 of 6
Test for lipids
Emulsion - add ethanol and shake, pour solution into water, if lipid is present water will turn milky
6 of 6
