Identifying Group 2 ions
Flame test

Dip wire loop in HCl (conc.)
Dip loop in sample
Hold over flame and observe colour change

Calcium - Brick Red
Strontium - Red
Barium - Pale Green

Add NaOH dropwise
Observe results

Magnesium - Slight white, Strong white in excess
Calcium - Slight white, Slight white in excess
Strontium - Slight white, Slight white in excess
Barium - No change, No change in excess

Test for Ammonium
Add NaOH
If NH₄ present H₂O and NH₃
Hold red litmus paper, if NH₃ present, it will turn blue

Test for Sulfate
Add HCl (removes any carbonate ions)
Add Barium Chloride
Barium Sulfate (white precipitate) produced

Test for OH⁻
Dip into red litmus paper
If OH⁻ present turns blue

Test for Halides
Add Silver Nitrate

Silver Chloride (Cl⁻ ion) - White Precipitate
Silver Bromide (Br⁻ ion) - Cream Precipitate
Silver Iodide (I⁻ ion) - Yellow Precipitate

Test for Carbonate
Add HCl
CO₂ produced, bubble through limewater
Turns cloudy
