Flexion
Bending of a joint to bring together the parts it connects – decreases the angle of a joint

Extension
Straightening of the joint – increases the angle of a joint

Abduction
A movement away from the midline of the body

Adduction
A movement towards the midline of the body

Rotation
Medial rotation is movement in which the anterior aspect of a limb turns towards the mid line and lateral rotation away from the mid line.

Circumduction
(Circum=around)
A circular movement of a part. This is a combination of flexion, abduction, extension, adduction and rotation

Pronation
In the anatomical position the forearm is rotated so that the palm of the hand faces backwards. If the elbow is flexed so that the forearm is horizontal the palm of the hand faces downwards

Supination
The opposite of pronation. The palm of the hand is turned to face forwards or upwards if the forearm is in the horizontal position

Inversion
Turning inwards of the plantar aspect of the foot

Eversion
Turning outwards the plantar aspect of the foot

Elevation
Lifting a body part superiorly (upwards)

Depression
Moving the elevated part inferiorly (downwards)

Dorsiflexion
A movement of the ankle which pulls the toes and foot up towards the body

Plantaflexion
A movement of the ankle which points the toes away from the body

Protraction
To move forward (this term is only used in relation to the jaw and the shoulder)

Retraction
To move backwards (this term is only used in relation to the shoulder and the jaw)

Opposition
Bringing the thumb to a position opposite to the fingers (as in grasp/grip)

Prone
Lying or positioned on the tummy
