Worlds largest refugee crisis. Estimated 2 million people in need of protection in Syria, 12 millions fleed country.

Where do the refugees go:
Jordan (500,000), Turkey (3 million), Iraq (100,000), Egypt (150,000), Lebanon (1 million), EU.

Jordan:
set up Zhatari camp- initially for 60,000, now has 145,000. Costs $500,000 to run daily. Has become Jordan's 4th largest city.

Lebanon:
Destabilised border region and refugees make up 20% of their population

Turkey:
Pull- close, less risk, opened borders to migrants, step closer to EU. Have provided $8bn of aid. Now hugely pressure for coping with the numbers and needs, also problems: crime and overcrowded.

Problems:
Majority do not live in camps and are unprotected, many (4.25 million) are unable to move across the border. Refugee camps increasingly pressured for resources.

EU response
Granted asylum if they reach the EU- difficult and costly. EU quota plan- refugees apply for asylum before arrival. Only 25,000 refugees have made it into European coun
